In short
Your soul urge number, also called the heart's desire number, is calculated from the vowels in your full birth name. Where the life path describes your road and the expression number your abilities, the soul urge describes what you want. It is the quietest number in a numerology chart and usually the most uncomfortable to read.
New here? The free Sacred Path quiz reads which of these patterns is running you, in about ninety seconds.
There is a question that gets harder the longer you go without answering it, and by a certain point in a woman's life it can become almost impossible to answer at all.
What do you want?
Not what needs doing. Not what would be sensible, or fair, or best for everybody. What do you want.
Numerology calls it the soul urge number, and of all the numbers in a chart it is the one people go quietest around.
What is a soul urge number?
Your soul urge number, also called the heart's desire number, is calculated from the vowels in your full birth name. It describes inner motivation: what satisfies you. Aptitude lives in the expression number, circumstance in the life path. Appetite lives here.
It sits alongside two others, and the three answer three different questions:
| Number | Calculated from | The question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Life path | Your date of birth | What does my life keep asking of me? |
| Expression | Every letter of your birth name | What am I built to do? |
| Soul urge | The vowels in your birth name | What do I actually want? |
The expression number and life path are about capability and circumstance. This one is about desire, which is a category most of us stopped taking seriously somewhere around the second child or the third promotion.
How do you calculate your soul urge number?
Only the vowels, from the full name on your birth certificate, middle names included. If your surname has changed since, the birth name is the one to use.
| A | E | I | O | U |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 | 9 | 6 | 3 |
Add them, then reduce to a single digit, keeping 11, 22 or 33 if you land on one.
Worked example: Mary Elizabeth Brown.
- MARY: A is 1
- ELIZABETH: 5 plus 9 plus 1 plus 5 is 20
- BROWN: O is 6
Total 27. Reduce: 2 plus 7 is 9. Soul urge number 9.
In the standard method used here, Y is a consonant and does not count. Some schools count Y as a vowel when it carries the vowel sound, as in Lynn. Both conventions exist and neither is provably right. Pick one and use it consistently, because a number you recalculate whenever you dislike the answer has stopped being a number and become a mood.
Why are only the vowels used for the soul urge number?
Because vowels are the sounds you cannot make silently.
Say your name without them. The consonants are the shape, the frame, the part visible on the page. The vowels are what happens when the name is actually spoken aloud, and numerology reads that as the interior of a person: what is going on underneath the shape everyone can see.
You are allowed to find that poetic. Most of numerology is a symbolic language and works best read as one.

What do all 12 soul urge numbers mean?
| Number | Heart's desire | What it can look like when this one has gone unheard |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | To be your own authority | Deference that curdles into resentment, and a long private list of things you would have done differently |
| 2 | Genuine closeness and peace | Peace kept, never had. It costs more, and the bill arrives later |
| 3 | Expression, colour, being heard | Talking less every year, and calling it maturity |
| 4 | Order, security, solid ground | Building stability for other people while your own life stays provisional |
| 5 | Freedom and movement | A tidy life you feel faintly imprisoned by, and holidays that never quite fix it |
| 6 | To care and be cared for in return | The caring flows out and very little comes back. The imbalance becomes ordinary |
| 7 | Solitude, depth, understanding | A life with no room in it to think, and a short fuse in a woman who used to have a long one |
| 8 | Authority, mastery, real influence | Running things from underneath and letting somebody else hold the title |
| 9 | To give something to the world | A cause you meant to give your life to, still sitting in the folder marked later |
| 11 | Meaning, insight, the larger pattern | A sensitivity you have spent thirty years managing as though it were a fault |
| 22 | To build something that lasts | Enormous capability, all of it going into upkeep. Nothing built |
| 33 | To heal, to hold, to teach | The one everyone calls, and nothing she knows has ever been written down |
Eleven, 22 and 33 are master numbers. Convention holds them at the double digit, and the life path guide explains that at more length.
Why this number is the uncomfortable one
Here is one way it goes.
A woman reads her life path and nods. She reads her expression number and thinks yes, that is about right, that is what I am good at. Then she reads her soul urge and something goes still, because it describes a person she has not been in a long while.
If you have spent decades as the one who copes, wanting has been the least useful thing you could do with your attention. Needs cost time you did not have. So the wanting got quieter, and then it got quiet, and now somebody asks what you want for your own birthday and your mind returns a blank page. The mechanics of that are in learning to receive.
The soul urge does not tell you what to do about it. What it offers is a place to stand where the wanting came first. That is occasionally all a woman needs.
What if my soul urge number does not sound like me?
Then read it as history.
The number comes from a name you were given before you had done anything at all, so it cannot have been shaped by the arrangement you have been living inside. When it describes somebody unfamiliar, one reasonable reading is that you are looking at the woman who was there before the arrangement started.
Which can be an uncomfortable thing to sit with on a Tuesday afternoon in a kitchen you chose, in a life you built on purpose, with nothing whatsoever wrong with it. The number is not an instruction to blow anything up. It is a description of an appetite that predates all of it, and appetites can be fed in very small ways.
Sometimes it will simply be wrong. Numerology is a lens. No symbolic system gets everybody, and you should keep what is useful.
Where this leads
If the number named something you have not said out loud in years, the full Cosmic Blueprint reading takes it further, reading your soul urge against the life you have actually built rather than leaving it as a word in a table.
The free Sacred Path quiz is the shorter door in. Two minutes, no arithmetic.

Common questions
What is a soul urge number?
The soul urge number, also called the heart's desire number, is one of the core numbers in a numerology chart. It is calculated from the vowels in your full birth name and describes your inner motivation: what genuinely satisfies you. Skill belongs to the expression number and circumstance to the life path. This is the one that answers what you want when nobody is asking anything of you.
How do you calculate your soul urge number?
Take only the vowels from your full birth name, including middle names, and convert each using the Pythagorean chart: A is 1, E is 5, I is 9, O is 6, U is 3. Add them together and reduce to a single digit, keeping 11, 22 or 33 if you land on one. In the standard method used here, Y is treated as a consonant and left out.
Why are only the vowels used for the soul urge number?
Vowels are the sounds you cannot make silently, which is the symbolic logic behind it: consonants are the shape a name makes on the page, vowels are what happens when it is spoken. Whether or not that reasoning persuades you, it is the standard method, so a chart that used every letter would simply be an expression number under a different name.
What if my soul urge number does not sound like me at all?
That is common. Sit with it before you dismiss it. The soul urge describes what a person wants, and wanting is the first thing to go quiet in a life built around other people's needs. If yours sounds like someone you were a long time ago, that is information rather than an error.
If any of this felt like it was written about you, that is exactly what the free Sacred Path reading is for. It names your pattern and the doorway back to yourself.
